Rock Goby

Fascinating facts about the Rock Goby

• A single rock goby can deposit as many as 7,000 eggs in one shallow layer just 2.5 mm thick, and the male will guard the clutch fiercely until they hatch after about 19 days; this intense parental care shows how even tiny fish can invest heavily in the next generation.
• Although most individuals stay under 12 cm long, some rock gobies have been recorded living up to a full decade, a lifespan that rivals many larger coastal fishes and hints at their resilience in changing habitats.
• When the breeding season arrives, males turn dramatically darker than their usual black-and-white pattern, a visual cue that signals they are protecting a nest of thousands of eggs, revealing how color can be a powerful communication tool in the underwater world.
• Rock gobies occupy a broad range, from western Scotland down to Senegal, and into the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Red Sea, and Gulf of Aqaba, and can live in both salty and brackish environments.
• These fish can be found from the shoreline down to 15 m (49 ft) depth, often hiding beneath rocks or in large tide pools during summer, showing how they exploit the narrow space between land and sea to avoid predators and find food.
