Fascinating facts about the Gulper Eel

• Its mouth opens to 120 degrees — wide enough to swallow a fish twice its own body size whole. The gulper eel lives at depths of 600 to 2,000 metres where prey is scarce, so it evolved a stomach that expands like a balloon and a body barely thicker than a pencil to maximize hunting efficiency with minimal energy waste.
• The tail fin lights up with bioluminescence and dangles like a fishing lure in front of its own mouth. Scientists believe the gulper eel uses its own glowing tail tip to attract smaller fish into the dark cavern of its gullet — essentially baiting itself to feed itself, a strategy found nowhere else in the deep ocean.
• It has nearly no muscle in its 60-centimetre body, relying instead on a gelatinous skeleton and loose skin. This near-weightlessness lets it hang almost motionless in the water column, burning calories at a rate that would let a human survive for months on a single meal.
