Mountain Dragon

Fascinating facts about the Mountain Dragon

• In the cool uplands of Tasmania, the only native agamid lizard hides among dry heath, relying on its grey-to-reddish coat and scalloped back stripes to blend like a living rock. Its camouflage lets it avoid predators without climbing high. This shows how a simple color trick can replace the need for speed or height in survival.
• A typical mountain dragon measures just 7.5 cm from snout to the base of its tail, though the largest individuals reach 9 cm before the tail adds extra length, topping out at about 20 cm overall. Females generally outgrow males, a subtle size shift that hints at different reproductive roles in this species.
• When the summer heat peaks, females dig shallow burrows and lay between 2 and 9 eggs, each tucked safely beneath the soil. This modest clutch size balances the need to produce enough offspring while staying hidden from egg-predators.
• The mountain dragon’s mouth interior is pink, whereas the jacky dragon’s mouth interior is yellow.
• Feeding almost exclusively on ants and tiny invertebrates, this small reptile plays a quiet role in controlling insect populations across New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. Its diet ties the health of dry woodlands directly to the presence of these tiny hunters.
