In the entire 20th century, fewer than 5 people in North America died from coral snake bites, yet thousands were bitten by harmless king snakes and scarlet snakes mistaken for them. • A coral snake's venom is neurotoxic enough to paralyse a mammal 20 times its own weight, yet it hunts animals smaller than a paperclip. It specializes in eating other snakes, slithering into burrows and under leaf litter to find them in the dark — a hunting style so secretive that herpetologists still don't fully understand how it finds prey. For 300 years, people watched these snakes and assumed they ate nothing.
