• The ornate box turtle is one of only two box-turtle species recognised in the United States. It is split into the nominate ornata and the desert luteola subspecies, each occupying distinct parts of the central and western United States. The nominate form ranges from western Indiana through eastern Texas into Louisiana and even reaches northeastern New Mexico, while luteola inhabits the driest areas of western Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and adjoining northern Mexico.
• Its carapace is noticeably less domed, giving the turtle a slightly flattened appearance unlike its relatives. This flatter shell is a defining characteristic that sets it apart from other North American box turtles.
