• A prairie lizard's push-ups aren't exercise—they're a threat display so aggressive it can trigger a fight with a rival from 10 metres away. Males bob their front legs in specific patterns, each sequence encoding their size, strength, and willingness to fight. Other males read these signals like a coded message and either back down or charge. It's silent combat negotiation played out in the grass.
• Prairie lizards have evolved a built-in thermometer: dark patches on their belly called ventral patches that absorb solar heat faster than light skin.
