About the Common Krait

The common krait (Bungarus caeruleus) glides through South Asian landscapes with a sleek, black or bluish-black body streaked by about forty thin, white crossbands that fade into a series of spots on older individuals. Adults average 0.9 m, yet some reach 1.75 m, with males sporting longer tails than females. Its head is flat, eyes small and pupils round, and the polished scales lie in 15–17 rows, the central vertebral row enlarged into a hexagonal ridge. This nocturnal elapid thrives in a mosaic of habitats, scrub jungles, grasslands, semi-desert, rocky outcrops, and the cultivated fields and gardens that fringe villages. It shelters by day in termite mounds, rat burrows, or under debris, emerging after dusk to hunt with a silent, serpentine grace. Its diet is a specialist’s menu: other snakes, including venomous kraits and vipers, supplemented by rodents, lizards, birds and frogs. A surprising trait sets it apart, female kraits guard their clutches of five to fifteen eggs for about sixty days, a rare display of parental care among snakes, ensuring the hatchlings emerge already armed with potent venom. This blend of cryptic appearance, adaptable habitat use, and an unexpected maternal instinct makes the common krait a master of survival in the ever-changing human-dominated landscapes of the Indian subcontinent,
