• Only male Eld's deer grow antlers—and they shed and regrow them twice a year, not once. Most deer cycle through one set annually; Eld's deer's double cycle is tied to their tropical habitat where food is available year-round, letting them afford the energy cost of building bone twice. This means a stag can carry antlers for roughly 8 months total, spending half his year in velvet—the spongy skin that feeds growing antlers with blood.
• Eld's deer were hunted to near extinction in the wild—by the 1970s, fewer than 100 remained in a single Thai wildlife sanctuary. Today around 4,000 exist, nearly all descended from a population smaller than a large village. Without a captive breeding program that began in the 1980s, they would have vanished entirely, making them one of conservation's narrowest escapes.
• In the mating season, male Eld's deer produce a smell so pungent it can be detected 100 metres away, even by humans. They mark territory by thrashing vegetation with their antlers, creating visible trails through grassland that broadcast their size and strength to rivals. A dominant stag will spend entire nights calling and scent-marking just to advertise occupancy.
• Eld's deer are one of the few deer that prefer grassland over forest—an unusual choice that made them both easier to hunt and harder to save. They evolved in the floodplain meadows of Southeast Asia where grass grows thick and sight lines are long, trading cover for open grazing. Today most survivors live in protected grassland reserves, fenced away from the agriculture that replaced their original range.
• Newborn Eld's deer fawns remain hidden in tall grass for their first 4–6 weeks, hidden so well that researchers often cannot find them even when they know where the mother left them. The fawn stays motionless and odourless, relying on camouflage so complete that tigers walk past. Only when it can run fast enough—around 40 days old—does it rejoin the herd permanently.
