Within its home range it also creates unbranched bolt holes that serve as quick-escape refuges when danger appears. These burrows provide shelter, storage for food, and separate chambers for each squirrel during hibernation.
• Over the past ten years the European ground squirrel population has fallen by more than 30%, a decline that has placed the species on the IUCN Red List as endangered. This downward trend is noted across its range, with the southern, northwestern and northern areas most severely impacted. The main drivers of this loss are habitat changes such as converting grassland to crops or forest and the abandonment of grazing, which creates unsuitable tall vegetation.
