• A European ground squirrel can sleep for eight months without waking — longer than any other ground squirrel on Earth. Starting in July, their body temperature drops from 37°C to just 4°C, their heart rate plummets to 5 beats per minute, and they enter a state so deep they don't even stir when handled. They wake briefly every few weeks to nibble pre-cached seeds, then sink back into hibernation. This extreme torpor is their only survival strategy on the steppes where winter temperatures plunge below -20°C.
• In spring, male European ground squirrels wage chemical warfare over breeding rights. They coat their fur in a musky secretion and douse rivals in it, marking them as 'defeated' to every female in the colony. A squirrel drenched in another male's scent becomes invisible to potential mates for weeks — a non-violent coup that works because females read the chemical signature like a ranking system.
