• When a hog deer runs, it doesn't bound like other deer — it drops its rear end and bolts in a belly-low crouch, zigzagging through grass like a hunted pig. This posture lets it slip through dense Southeast Asian grasslands where taller deer would crash through, visible to predators from a kilometre away. A hog deer, barely 50 cm tall at the shoulder, vanishes in cover that would expose a sambar instantly.
• At just 3–4 kg, the Indochinese hog deer is one of Asia's smallest wild ungulates — lighter than a house cat, yet it survives in the same grasslands as tigers and leopards. Its teeth grow in a continuous curve, like a wild boar's, and its molars are built to grind tough fibres, not browse soft leaves like larger deer. This dental quirk, inherited from more pig-like ancestors, marks it as a living fossil among modern ungulates.
• Hog deer fawns are born scentless to predators — their bodies produce almost no detectable odour for their first weeks of life, a survival strategy unseen in most other deer species. A mother leaves her calf hidden in tall grass and only returns briefly to nurse, sometimes vanishing for 12 hours at a stretch. If the fawn were found by smell alone, it would be dead; instead, it simply waits, silent and unscented, until she returns.
• The Indochinese hog deer population has collapsed by more than 95% since the 1970s, erased from Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia in just 50 years. Habitat loss to rice paddies and shrimp farms destroyed the tropical grasslands it cannot survive without, and hunting for bushmeat finished what fragmentation started. Fewer than 7,500 individuals remain in the wild, mostly scattered across Myanmar and a handful of protected reserves in India and Thailand.
• Unlike most deer, hog deer are strongly nocturnal and solitary — a single doe and her fawn will never share space with another pair, even in areas where prey is abundant. They communicate through scent-marking on dung piles and low, pig-like squeals rather than the loud alarm calls of grassland deer. This secretive lifestyle once made them invisible to early naturalists; some explorers spent years in Southeast Asia without realising the species existed.
