Fascinating facts about the Wombat

• A wombat's cube-shaped droppings are the only animal feces that don't roll away. Each dropping is the size of a dice, deposited on rocks and logs where other wombats can't miss them — a billboard written in scat. Scientists still don't fully understand which part of their intestine creates the flat faces, but the engineering is so precise that a wombat's calling card stays put on hillsides for months, visible proof of territory ownership.
• Wombats chew through roots and tough grass with teeth that never stop growing — like a rodent trapped in a stocky, 35-kilogram bear suit. They can exert a bite force of 55 megapascals, enough pressure to snap branches thicker than a pencil. That grinding power lets them survive on low-nutrition vegetation that would starve most other herbivores, making them the only large mammal in Australia's dry regions that doesn't need to migrate or hibernate.
• When threatened, a wombat doesn't run — it backs toward its burrow at surprising speed and uses its muscular rump as a cork in the entrance. The rear end is reinforced with cartilage and tough hide, turning the last 15 centimetres of its body into an anvil that crushes the jaws of dingoes and Tasmanian devils. A cornered wombat has killed predators by holding them in a vice-grip against the tunnel roof.
• A wombat's metabolic rate is so slow that it only needs to defecate once a week, and it can store enough water in its body to survive 25 days without drinking. In a landscape where drought kills everything else, a wombat's plodding, miserly body plan means it stays alive eating dried grass and waiting. This is why early European settlers found wombats grazing calmly during conditions that scattered every other animal.
• Wombats dig burrows up to 10 metres long using forelimbs that are 50 percent muscle and bone by weight — proportionally stronger than a grizzly bear's digging arms. A single wombat may maintain multiple burrows across its 5-square-kilometre territory, creating an underground warren system that also shelters burrowing bettongs and other small mammals during bushfires. During the 2019–2020 Australian fires, scientists documented wombat burrows saving dozens of species from incineration.
