• A star-nosed mole's nose contains 25,000 touch receptors crammed into 22 fleshy tentacles — more sensory nerve endings than exist in an entire human hand. It scans its tunnel walls and the muddy lake bottom in complete darkness, building a three-dimensional map of prey invisible to any other sense. The brain devotes more processing power to these tentacles than to its eyes (which are vestigial pinpricks). This animal literally thinks in touch.
• At just 40 to 50 grams, star-nosed moles eat 60% of their body weight in food every day — equivalent to a human consuming 100 kilograms of meat in 24 hours. They hunt in underwater tunnels where oxygen runs out fast, so their metabolism is a calculated sprint: find food, gulp it down, breathe. Without constant feeding, they starve within hours.
• The star-nosed mole spends its entire life in underground water tunnels it digs with enormous front claws, surfacing only a handful of times a year. A mole's tunnel system can stretch 300 metres through a wetland, creating a labyrinth it navigates entirely by touch, smell, and the memory of texture. These tunnels are highways: permanent, patrolled, and lined with hunting grounds.
• Unlike most moles that dig with their forelimbs, the star-nosed mole uses its teeth to excavate — they are positioned at right angles to its skull, working like a chisel. This jaw adaptation lets it tunnel through clay and gravel that would defeat other species. After 400 million years of mole evolution, this North American oddity found a completely different way to carve its home.
• Star-nosed moles are found only in eastern North America within 50 kilometres of the Atlantic coast, from Nova Scotia to the Carolinas. Their range has shifted 200 kilometres northward since 1900 as climate warms — a clearer signal of climate change than temperature records alone.
