Common Four-clawed Gecko

Fascinating facts about the Common Four-clawed Gecko

• At just 2.25 in (5.7 cm) from snout to vent, this gecko packs a tail as long as its body, giving it a total length of about 4.5 in. Its lack of a claw on the innermost digit is the clinching ID clue for field herpetologists, separating it from look-alike house geckos.
• Adaptable to woodlands, rocky outcrops and even human homes, this gecko thrives from sea level up to 1,400 m (4,600 ft). Its comfort in houses makes it a common sight on walls and ceilings, where it silently hunts nocturnal insects. On Hawaiian sand beaches it has become invasive.
• Females lay one to three eggs per clutch, most often two, and the species sports 14 to 19 femoral pores on each side of its thighs. By preying on isopods, termites and other small insects, it helps keep household pest numbers down, showing how even a modest egg-laying lizard can provide a valuable pest-control service in homes.
• From the rain-soaked forests of Borneo to the sun-baked cliffs of the Mascarene Islands, this species spans including southeastern China, Hawaii (Maui), western Mexico and the Pitcairn Islands.
• When night falls, this gecko launches a series of "tock" calls, repeating the sound six to eight times and getting louder with each note. Researchers note it can sprint faster than its cousin, the common house gecko.
