- Its venom is 208% more hemorrhagic than that of the notorious Bothrops jararaca, tearing blood vessels and breaking down fibrinogen. In lab mice a dose of just 5.6 µg per 20 g caused paralysis, breathing trouble and loss of bladder control, while the LD50 sits at 2.79 ± 0.58 mg/kg, about as lethal as the feared Bothrops asper. For humans this means a bite can swell dramatically, bruise far from the wound and even disrupt liver function, showing that a rear-fanged snake can pack a medically serious punch despite its modest size.
- It chews venom into prey using grooved rear teeth, a method that demands far more effort than the quick needle-like strikes of vipers. The Duvernoy's gland secretes a protein-rich cocktail. This slower delivery explains why dry bites are common, yet when the snake manages a prolonged bite, the result can be severe muscle necrosis and dangerous clotting problems.
- It stretches from sea level to 1,700 m (5,600 ft), thriving in the Cerrado savanna, dry Caatinga scrub, dense forest, transitional woodlands and even coastal restinga dunes. At up to 1.5 m (60 in) long, this green racer can navigate both high canopy branches and the forest floor.
- It will swallow snakes nearly its own length, adding fellow serpents to a diet that already includes rodents, lizards, amphibians and bird nestlings. By preying on other snakes, sometimes almost as large as itself, it helps regulate reptile populations and reduces competition for shared prey. This predatory breadth showcases its role as a top mid-level carnivore, shaping community dynamics in the habitats it inhabits.
- A single female can lay between 4 and 11 eggs, each about 5 cm (2 in) long, and larger females tend to produce the higher end of that range.
