• A leaf-tailed gecko's tail is a perfect forgery — so identical to a dead leaf that insects land on it to lay eggs. The gecko's skin mimics not just the colour but the texture, veins, and decay patterns of leaves in its forest. When a predator's eye scans the branch, the tail vanishes into the background. If the tail detaches (a last-resort escape), it keeps twitching for minutes to distract the attacker while the gecko flees tailless.
• These geckos have no eyelids — instead, a transparent scale called a spectacle covers each eye like a contact lens. To clean it, they lick their own eyeball. The spectacle also lets them see in almost complete darkness, a crucial edge in the rainforest floor where almost no light reaches. Many nocturnal hunters have evolved this same solution, but few do it as elegantly.

• The leaf-tailed gecko's tongue is proportionally longer than any other gecko's — nearly as long as its body — and covered in sticky mucus that can trap insects mid-flight. A single strike takes 40 milliseconds, faster than a human can blink. The tongue retracts so fast it generates its own suction, vacuuming prey from the air rather than simply catching it.
