• A green iguana can hold its breath for up to 30 minutes and dive 12 metres underwater to escape predators — then resurface with a trick: its body temperature drops so low during the dive that it enters a state of torpor, moving almost like a slow-motion robot until it warms up again on land. This freezing response buys time to hide.
• Despite eating almost nothing but leaves, a green iguana grows to 2 metres long and can weigh 8 kg — as heavy as a small dog on a vegetarian diet. They achieve this by fermenting food in a specialised pouch attached to their intestines, extracting every calorie like a tiny biological brewery. Only a handful of lizards can pull off this herbivore trick.
• Male green iguanas have a throat flap called a dewlap that can inflate to twice the size of a golf ball, and they drag it across branches while walking to leave a scent-marked territory — a silent territorial billboard that tells other males: this tree canopy is taken. The dewlap is so large it's one of the first body parts to develop when a hatchling emerges.
• A green iguana's teeth are serrated like steak knives and point backwards into its jaw, designed not for biting but for holding slippery leaves and fruit while it chews. If a predator grabs its tail, the tail snaps off at a weak point in the spine — the iguana escapes and leaves behind a thrashing detachable limb that distracts the attacker for those critical seconds.
• In the rainforest canopy, green iguanas spend 95% of their time 15–20 metres above the ground, sunbathing on the highest branches where they're almost never seen. They're so well-hidden that local people can live surrounded by hundreds of iguanas and rarely spot one — which is why their vulnerable status went unnoticed for decades before hunting and habitat loss forced scientists to look up.
