Common Dolphinfish

Fascinating facts about the Common Dolphinfish

• Mahi-mahi can sprint at a blistering 50 knots, that's about 92.6 km/h (57.5 mph), making them one of the ocean's quickest predators. Their streamlined, tapered bodies and a dorsal fin that stretches almost to the tail give them the hydrodynamic edge needed to chase flying fish and squid in the open sea. This speed lets them capture fast-moving prey, shaping their role as a top-level hunter in pelagic ecosystems.
• Mahi-mahi hit reproductive maturity astonishingly early, males and females are ready by four to five months old, sometimes as soon as 20 cm (7.9 in) long. A single female can lay between 80,000 and 1,000,000 eggs per spawning event and may do this two to three times a year.
• Peruvian artisanal fleets targeting mahi-mahi now train crews to rescue by-caught turtles: 4,472 fishers have earned certification, and about 4,500 boats each carry at least one trained member. The program aims for 10,000 trained fishers. On a typical outing, crews may pull a 100-kg (220-lb) leatherback or a 40-kg (88-lb) green turtle from the line, cut the hook, and release it safely, a practice that protects fishers from injury.
• These fish grow like rockets: they can reach a meter (3 ft) and 7-13 kg, and some individuals push past 2 m and 39.5 kg, the heaviest recorded at 39.5 kg. Yet they live only a few years, averaging two in the wild and maxing out at five.
• In the open ocean, mahi-mahi hover around floating debris, Sargassum mats, and even frigatebird circles because their prey hide beneath these structures. Studies note they are This habit makes them easy to locate for anglers.
