About the Mummichog

The mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) is a stout, elongate killifish that typically measures 7.5 to 9 cm, though some individuals reach 15 cm. Its upturned mouth and protruding lower jaw give it a distinctive profile, while the lack of a lateral line is compensated by pores on the head. In the breeding season males blaze with dark olive backs, steel-blue flanks marked by about fifteen silvery bars, and a bright yellow underside, whereas females stay paler and unstriped. These fish crowd the muddy bottoms of Atlantic coastal marshes, tidal creeks, eelgrass beds and brackish estuaries from the Gaspé Peninsula in Canada down to northeastern Florida, forming dense shoals that can number several hundred. They are euryhaline masters, tolerating salinities from almost fresh (0.4 ppt) to three times seawater (100 ppt), and they survive temperature swings from 6 °C to 35 °C by swapping isoenzymes of lactate dehydrogenase, a biochemical flexibility mirrored in their ability to endure oxygen as low as 1 mg/L and even brief exposure to moist air. One of the most surprising traits is their resilience to severe pollutants – populations in heavily contaminated sites like Newark Bay and the Elizabeth River have rewired roughly 20 % of their genome, granting resistance to methylmercury, kepone, dioxins and PCBs, making them a living barometer of environmental stress.
