Pelagic Thresher

Fascinating facts about the Pelagic Thresher

• A pelagic thresher can launch itself out of the water five times in a row, a display that shows just how powerful its slender tail is for both hunting and startling predators. This leaping ability is rare among deep-water sharks and hints at a burst of speed usually hidden beneath the surface. It reminds us that even the most ocean-bound creatures can surprise us with aerial tricks.
• Newborn pelagic threshers arrive at up to 1.6 m long, about 43% of their mother's length.
• Each embryo first feeds on a yolk sac until it reaches 12 cm, then switches to eating 55 mm egg capsules that contain 20–30 ova, a diet called oophagy. This shift lets the pup grow quickly inside the mother without competing with siblings. The fact shows how sharks have evolved a built-in food supply to nurture their young before birth.
• A single female pelagic thresher can produce roughly 40 offspring over her lifetime, yet the species was listed as endangered in 2019 after heavy fishing pressure for meat, skin, liver oil, and fins. The contrast between their low reproductive output and high commercial value underscores why protecting them is urgent.
• Pelagic threshers weigh about 69.5 kg at 3 m length but can grow to 88.4 kg at 3.3 m, with the largest reliably measured individuals reaching 3.5 m for males and 3.8 m for females. Their modest size compared to other threshers, combined with a dark blue top and white belly that fades after death, makes them a distinct silhouette in the open ocean. This physical profile helps divers and fishers tell them apart from their white-fin cousins.
