About the Black Goby

The black goby (Gobius niger) glides through the shallow, brackish waters of the eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea, its dark brown body mottled with indistinct black blotches. Growing up to 18 cm in total length, it is deeper-bodied than its relatives, the common, sand, and two-spotted gobies, and sports a rounded snout, a scaled neck, and two nearly continuous dorsal fins each marked by a black spot at the front. The anterior dorsal fin bears six spines that may jut from the membrane, while the shorter posterior fin ends near the caudal peduncle, a distinctive silhouette against the seagrass and algae where it dwells. Males turn almost black during the breeding season, their fins taking on vivid hues as they defend territories among the weeds. In its preferred habitats, lagoons, estuaries, and inshore zones with sandy or muddy bottoms, this opportunistic predator stalks the seabed for small invertebrates and occasionally nips at tiny fish. Summer brings a dramatic courtship: the male clears a patch of clean substrate, invites a female to inspect the nest, and, once she consents, guards the deposited eggs until they hatch. A surprising trait for such a modest fish is its occasional foray into fresh water, demonstrating a tolerance that allows it to exploit a range of coastal environments, even as it finds a niche in the aquarium trade.
