African Helmeted Turtle

Fascinating facts about the African Helmeted Turtle

• A 32.5 cm (12.8 in) individual once shattered the usual size range of this turtle, which normally stays under 20 cm (7.9 in). That outlier shows the species can grow far larger than most hobbyists expect, hinting at hidden growth potential in certain habitats.
• When a group of these turtles corners a drinking dove, the frantic splash can be mistaken for a crocodile attack.
• During extreme drought, a turtle may bury itself and remain dormant for months, or even years, until rain returns.
• Two to ten eggs are laid in a flask-shaped nest 10–18 cm (4–7 in) deep, and the embryos hatch after 75–90 days. The precise timing and nest depth underscore the turtle’s finely tuned reproductive strategy in unpredictable environments.
• Large mammals such as warthogs, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceroses have been documented utilizing the turtles to remove parasites at popular wallowing holes.
