• A hawksbill's beak can prise open sponges that would resist a human with pliers — the narrow, pointed jaw slots into crevices only 2–3mm wide and applies force with surgical precision. Unlike most sea turtles that are herbivores or generalists, hawksbills are architectural engineers of the reef, removing tonnes of sponges every year and sculpting the structure where thousands of fish species live. Without them, coral gardens collapse into monocultures of sponge.
• Hawksbills navigate across thousands of kilometres of open ocean to return to the same 100-metre stretch of beach where they were born — sometimes after 35 years away. They carry a magnetic map imprinted in their nervous system before they ever hatch, yet scientists still don't fully understand how a turtle brain processes coordinates across an entire ocean basin.
• Their shell is worth up to £4,000 on the black market because it's translucent amber-brown and can be carved into jewellery — a trade that killed 90% of the global population between the 1960s and 1990s. Today, fewer than 23,000 nesting females remain on Earth. Each turtle represents an individual loss; losing a breeding female erases her genetic legacy for good.
