• Most lizards lay eggs, but the viviparous lizard gives birth to live babies — a strategy that works because it lives where summers are too short and cold for eggs to hatch underground. A female carries 3 to 11 pups inside her body for up to 6 weeks, then delivers them wrapped in a transparent membrane they break through minutes after birth. This single adaptation lets them survive from Britain to Siberia, places where egg-laying cousins cannot.
• At just 7 centimetres long, the viviparous lizard is one of Europe's smallest reptiles, yet it has colonised the Arctic Circle's edge — the northernmost lizard in the world. Its tiny body loses heat fast, so it basks on moss and stone to warm up each morning, sometimes for hours. Without this heat, its muscles stay sluggish and it cannot hunt, digest food, or escape predators.
