• In some regions a dark morph of the tawny emperor is common, its hindwings appearing almost entirely black. This form shows nearly uniformly dark hindwings, a stark contrast to the species' usual dark brown upperside. The dark morph is regionally common, giving the butterfly a markedly different appearance when it flies. Like all individuals, it retains the typical wingspan of 51 to 66 mm.
• The female tawny emperor deposits its eggs in tight green clusters on the leaves of hackberry trees, the only plant on which its caterpillars can develop. These green eggs hatch into larvae that are also green, marked with yellow, white or greenish stripes. Because hackberry is the sole host, the butterfly's life cycle is tightly linked to the distribution of these trees across its range.
• Adult tawny emperors obtain most of their nourishment from carrion, plant sap and dung, only occasionally alighting on flowers. They are often observed flying close to human habitations such as houses and gravel driveways, as well as near water, muddy places, gardens and woodland clearings. This feeding habit allows them to exploit nutrient sources that many other butterflies ignore, supporting their survival in a variety of habitats.
