Angle Shades

Fascinating facts about the Angle Shades

• At just 45-52 mm across, the angle shades moth, yet its forewings carry a bold V-shaped pink-and-green splash that slices through the background like a painted arrow. That vivid patch works as disruptive patterning camouflage, breaking up the moth's outline so predators see a jumble of colour rather than a tasty insect.
• When dusk falls, the angle shades takes to the night sky, drawn irresistibly to artificial lights and sweet sugars. It feeds on flower nectar such as that of Buddleja, sipping sugary rewards while flitting over gardens, hedgerows and woodland. This nocturnal attraction to light.
• Unlike many insects that die as adults, the angle shades overwinters as a caterpillar, enduring cold months before turning into a pupa in spring. The larva is a dull green or pinkish brown speckled with pale dots, sporting a whitish dorsal line and narrow lateral lines, with darker oblique stripes on segments 4-11.
• The angle shades moth spans continents, living from the western edge of Europe across the Urals to the Azores, and down into Algeria, Asia Minor, Armenia and Syria. Its ability to travel long distances classifies it as a migratory species.
• First recorded by Carl Linnaeus in the landmark 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae, the angle shades.
