Fascinating facts about the Question Mark

• A silver punctuation mark on the underside of each wing gives this butterfly its name — but it's also a mirror. The metallic spot reflects light like a tiny eye-spot predator signal, fooling birds into attacking the wing edge instead of the body. Evolution turned typography into armour.
• Question marks survive North American winters as adults, not pupae. They roost under bark in a torpid state, their wing undersides cryptic brown to vanish against tree trunks. When a warm day arrives in February, they're already awake and hunting for sap — weeks ahead of butterflies still developing in chrysalises.
• Males patrol the forest floor at dusk hunting for females, a behaviour called hilltopping. They perch on low branches and dart after anything that moves — rivals, females, falling leaves. A single male can inspect 100 potential mates in an evening, rejecting most through pheromone chemistry they taste with their feet.
• The caterpillar's host plants — nettles and hops — are defended by stinging hairs that would poison most insects. Question mark caterpillars sequester the plant's toxins and store them in their own tissue, becoming toxic in turn. A bird learns once to avoid them. The warning is written in the butterfly's dark colour.
• Two completely different wing colours emerge from identical pupae depending on temperature during development. Cool spring butterflies have pale, cryptic undersides for camouflage. Summer heat triggers production of deeper oranges and browns — a colour change that takes 10 days during metamorphosis and responds to signals the caterpillar never received.
