Most spiders see movement and blur; this one sees detail.
• At night, the mouse spider's eyes glow red under torchlight — a phenomenon called eyeshine — because a reflective layer behind each eye bounces light back out like a cat's. This biological mirror amplifies available light by up to 1,000 times, transforming a dark forest floor into a hunting ground where it can track prey in conditions 40 times dimmer than humans need to see.
• Unlike web-builders that sit and wait, the mouse spider is a ground-stalking pursuit hunter.
