Mouse Spider

Fascinating facts about the Mouse Spider

• The mouse spider is a ground-dwelling hunter that never spins a capture web. At night it leaves its shelter to chase insects and other spiders, ejecting a stream of sticky silk from its enlarged spinnerets to quickly immobilise prey on the ground. This active pursuit replaces the passive trapping strategy of many relatives. When suitable food is scarce it will also scavenge opportunistically, taking whatever dead insects it encounters.
• The spider's abdomen is a brown-grey shield densely covered with fine hairs that give it a fuzzy texture reminiscent of a tiny mouse's fur, which is why the species is called the mouse spider. This distinctive covering contrasts with the dark brown carapace and the brown legs that bear thick pubescence. The visual similarity is most obvious when the spider is seen on walls or under bark, where its mouse-like silhouette stands out.
• Female mouse spiders use their silk to build protective nests for their eggs.
• Although its origins lie in Europe, the Caucasus, Turkey and Iran, this spider has travelled far beyond those borders. Human activity has carried it to North America, Peru and the Hawaiian islands where it now establishes populations. In Britain it is most often encountered inside homes during the autumn months, while in warmer European regions it hides under bark or in wall cavities.
• Male mouse spiders reach a modest 9 mm in length and finish their growth in early summer, while females grow larger, attaining up to 12 mm. This size difference becomes apparent when adult specimens are compared, with females visibly bigger than their male counterparts. Adult females remain active and can be observed until autumn, extending the period during which the species is present in its habitats.
