Fascinating facts about the Sunfish

• The ocean sunfish is the heaviest bony fish ever recorded — a specimen caught off Portugal in 1910 weighed 2.3 tonnes, as much as a grand piano. Despite this, it eats almost nothing but jellyfish, spending hours each day grazing through swarms like an underwater cow. It must consume its own body weight in jellyfish every few days just to fuel its enormous frame, a feast-or-famine existence in the open ocean.
• A sunfish can produce 300 million eggs in a single spawning — more eggs than any other vertebrate on Earth. A tuna produces 10 million. A human produces roughly 400 in her entire lifetime. This staggering fertility suggests the ocean's predators and currents kill nearly all of them before they become adults, yet somehow enough survive to fill tropical oceans with creatures that weigh as much as horses.
• From egg to adult, a sunfish grows 60 million times larger — no other animal on record undergoes such extreme scaling. A newly hatched sunfish is the size of a grain of rice; 15 months later it weighs 680 kilos. Their bodies transform so radically that early naturalists believed juvenile sunfish were an entirely different species, a case of mistaken identity that persisted for decades.
• Sunfish have no tail fin in the traditional sense. Instead, their spine fuses into a blunt, paddle-like structure called a clavus, and they steer through the water by waving their tall dorsal and anal fins like oars. This design makes them clumsy sprinters but efficient long-distance drifters, perfectly suited to a life spent floating through warm currents and snatching jellyfish as they pass.
• Parasites infest sunfish at rates unseen in any other fish — a single individual can harbour over 50 species of parasitic copepods, flukes, and tapeworms burrowed into its skin, gills, and organs. Sunfish are so attractive to parasites that sea lions, birds, and even smaller fish gather to pluck them off in cleaning frenzies, turning the sunfish's parasitic burden into a feeding opportunity for half the ocean's predators.
