• A spinner dolphin can rotate its body up to 14 times in a single leap — flipping like a corkscrew to heights of 6 metres above the water. This behaviour, which gives the species its name, may help them shake off parasites, communicate across distances, or stun prey below the surface. Yet after 50 years of study, scientists still debate why they spin at all, making it one of the ocean's most visible unsolved mysteries.
• Spinner dolphins navigate using echolocation clicks that reach 130 decibels — loud enough to temporarily stun the fish and squid they hunt. They produce these clicks in a specialized structure in their skull called the melon, which acts like a biological sonar lens. A single dolphin can fire 1,200 clicks per second, building a three-dimensional sound map of prey hiding in the dark waters up to 100 metres away.
• In the Eastern Tropical Pacific, spinner dolphins undertake a vertical migration that repeats every 24 hours: they descend 200 to 300 metres during the day to follow a deep scattering layer of lanternfish and squid, then rise to shallow coastal waters at night to rest. This daily journey, made by pods of up to 1,000 animals moving in perfect synchronisation, consumes enormous energy but gives them access to prey other dolphins cannot reach.
• Spinner dolphins have one of the longest developmental periods of any oceanic dolphin — calves stay dependent on their mothers for 2 to 3 years and don't reach full maturity until age 7 or 8. This extended childhood allows young dolphins to learn intricate hunting techniques, social hierarchies, and distinct dialects from their pod. A calf that loses its mother before independence has almost no chance of survival, making population recovery from fishing pressure slow and uncertain.
• Between 1980 and 1990, the eastern Pacific tuna fishery killed roughly 100,000 spinner dolphins annually by setting nets on their pods to catch yellowfin tuna beneath them. This culling — one of the largest marine mammal die-offs in recorded history — reduced some populations by 80%. The survival of the species after such devastation reveals both the resilience of remaining populations and how fragile their recovery remains, with some regional groups still classified as depleted today.
