• A newborn dwarf sperm whale is barely a foot long and weighs only about 14 kg, yet it reaches adult size of up to 2.7 m and 272 kg, roughly the weight of a small car, by the time it matures. Males are thought to reach physical maturity at age 15 and females at age 13, after growing to 2-2.2 m in length. Gestation probably lasts around 9.5 months and the species can live up to age 22. These life-history numbers show how quickly this tiny deep-diver must grow and reproduce in a world where predation by orcas and great white sharks is a constant threat.
• Dwarf sperm whales feed mainly on squid, using powerful throat grooves and a short snout to create suction, possibly the best-developed suction-feeding apparatus among toothed whales. • Diving depths vary dramatically by region: a study in the Bahamas found dwarf sperm whales cruising at an average of 250 m (820 ft), while Hawaiian observations recorded average depths of about 1,500 m (4,900 ft).
