• A West Indian manatee can stretch as long as a city bus and tip the scales of a small truck. The average adult measures 2.7-3.5 m (8.9-11.5 ft) and weighs 200-600 kg (440-1,320 lb), but the biggest recorded individual tipped the scales at 1,655 kg (3,649 lb) and reached 4.6 m (15 ft) long. In Brazil, individuals average about 3.5 m (11.5 ft) and 700 kg (1,500 lb), with some pushing 1,600 kg (3,500 lb). Such massive size makes rescue logistics a nightmare, demanding heavy-duty equipment and crews, and means every lost animal is a huge blow to the dwindling population.
• Manatees never run out of teeth because they grow a new set like a conveyor belt. Six to eight molariform teeth form at the back of each jaw quadrant and migrate forward at 1-2 mm per month, falling out only when worn down. This continuous replacement lets them chew 5-10 % of their body weight in vegetation each day, up to 100 kg for a large adult, without ever running short of grinding surfaces. The endless tooth supply is a key adaptation to their abrasive, plant-rich diet and underpins their ability to graze for six to eight hours daily.
• Manatees talk to each other with a repertoire of squeaks and screeches that can identify who's who. Studies have shown sex- and age-related differences in vocal structure, suggesting each animal has a unique voice. Playback experiments trigger increased vocalization, suggesting they may be able to recognize a familiar individual's sound. Most of this chatter happens between mothers and calves.
• A manatee's metabolism is so low it can't keep warm in water colder than a cool-room. Their extremely low metabolic rate and lack of insulating fat force them to stay in waters above roughly 20 °C (68 °F), or risk cold-induced stress and death. In winter Florida manatees flock to artificial warm-water outflows from power plants, while their Caribbean cousins cope better because their range stays warmer. This temperature constraint shapes their seasonal migrations and makes habitat loss of warm refuges a critical conservation issue.
• Only about a thousand West Indian manatees remain in Brazil, and each one takes four years to raise a calf. The species was listed as endangered in the 1970s when only several hundred survived, but a 2017 reclassification to threatened reflected modest recovery. Today, the Brazilian population is estimated at 1,047 individuals, with a reproduction rate of one calf every four years, meaning every adult loss dramatically shrinks future numbers. This slow breeding pace makes the species especially vulnerable to boat strikes, habitat loss, and oil-spill disasters.
