Fascinating facts about the South American Fur Seal

• A South American fur seal can dive to 230 metres and hold its breath for 11 minutes — deep enough to hunt in the twilight zone where sunlight barely reaches. Their eyes swell to the size of marbles in darkness, and a special reflective layer behind the retina acts like a mirror, bouncing scarce light back through the eye a second time. This is why they hunt at night when squid rise from the deep; they see it, prey doesn't.
• Male fur seals roar at 130 decibels — louder than a chainsaw — to defend harems of up to 15 females on rocky islands off Argentina and Uruguay. A single breeding bull will fast for three months straight, losing 40% of his body weight while he never leaves the beach. He doesn't sleep more than a few minutes at a time. By breeding season's end, he's half-starved but has fathered the next generation.
• Newborn fur seal pups learn their mother's voice in the chaos of 1,000 animals screaming at once — each mother calls her own pup in a unique frequency that only that pup recognizes. When the pup is weaned at 2–3 months old, it must catch its own fish within days or starve. Pups teach themselves to dive by trial and error, and roughly half don't survive their first year.
• The population crashed to fewer than 2,000 animals by the 1970s after centuries of commercial sealing — humans killed them for their pelts and fat. Legal protection since 1990 has allowed numbers to rebound to around 200,000 today, one of conservation's few genuine recoveries. They were hunted nearly to extinction; their abundance now is a repurposed species, returned from the brink.
• Fur seals can smell a fish buried under 30 centimetres of sand on the seafloor and sense electrical fields generated by muscle contractions in prey — sensory tricks that let them hunt in murky water where visibility is near zero. Their whiskers, called vibrissae, are wired directly to the brain and detect the tiniest water movements from fish in the darkness. They hunt prey they cannot see.
