• Females of the southern red muntjac carry only six chromosomes while males have seven, giving the species the lowest recorded chromosome count of any mammal. This diploid number is unusually small compared with other mammals and even other muntjac species. The tiny set reflects a unique genetic makeup that distinguishes the muntjac within the deer family. Such a low chromosome complement is highlighted as a record-holding trait for the species.
• Male southern red muntjacs grow elongated upper canines that measure between 2 and 4 cm and are slightly curved, making them a potent weapon in fights. These teeth are employed during male-male conflicts over territory and mates, and can inflict serious injuries. In addition to their short antlers, the canines are considered the more dangerous armament in such battles. The species therefore relies on both antlers and these sharp canines to establish dominance.
• Southern red muntjacs possess large, obvious facial (preorbital) scent glands that are unique among deer. Males use these glands to rub secretions onto the ground and tree bark, often accompanied by hoof and incisor scraping, to delineate and advertise their territories. The glands are larger in males than females, enhancing their ability to signal occupancy and reproductive readiness.
• Southern red muntjacs thrive when forest cover is reduced, quickly moving into the newly created edges. Their adaptability to disturbed habitats is shown by their presence in low-density and heavily degraded forests as well as near coffee, rubber and teak plantations. In areas altered by logging they often become among the most frequently camera-trapped deer, and in Danum Valley, Borneo, researchers recorded higher densities of the species after deforestation.
• The southern red muntjac is the most ancient living member of the deer family, with fossils confirming its existence since the late Pleistocene at least 12,000 years ago. This makes it the oldest known extant cervid, predating other modern deer species. Moreover, while early deer ancestors bore horns, the muntjac was the first to evolve true antlers, marking a key evolutionary step.
