- At the shoulder, a bay duiker stands just 44-49 cm tall, about the length of a school ruler, and weighs only 18-23 kg, roughly the mass of a sack of potatoes. Both males and females sport a pair of spiky horns only 5-8 cm long, the size of a fingernail, though one record from Cameroon noted a 12.3 cm horn. This modest stature lets the animal slip through dense underbrush, a key advantage for a nocturnal forest dweller that must evade leopards and move silently while foraging.
- A female bay duiker can become pregnant as early as eighteen months, and the species breeds year-round, producing a single calf after a gestation of about 240 days, roughly eight months. Newborns weigh just 1,600-1,690 g and stay hidden in thick vegetation for the first weeks. They begin nibbling solid food within weeks and are weaned by three-and-a-half months.
- In 1999, experts estimated that roughly 725,000 bay duikers still roamed western and central Africa, making it one of the more abundant duiker species despite heavy hunting pressure.
