• In 2017, scientists announced they'd found a third orangutan species hiding in plain sight — the Tapanuli orangutan — in the dense montane forests of northern Sumatra. This discovery of a great ape was the first in 20 years, and it revealed that what researchers thought was one species was actually three, each separated by geography and geology. The Tapanuli population numbers just 800 individuals, making it rarer than the giant panda.
• A male Tapanuli orangutan's throat pouch can inflate to the size of a grapefruit, and when he roars through it, the sound carries across 2 kilometres of forest — a distance that lets him claim territory without ever meeting a rival face-to-face. These roars are so loud they vibrate leaves and alert females to his presence. For an animal living alone in dense forest, sound is the only way to broadcast your address.
• Unlike their cousins, Tapanuli orangutans spend almost all their time in the canopy — rarely coming to the ground — and they've learned to navigate the treeline by swaying and bouncing on branches to test whether they'll hold 90 kilograms of weight. They build a new sleeping nest from branches and leaves almost every single night, a skill young orangutans don't master until their fourth year. A wild Tapanuli might build over 1,500 nests in a lifetime.
• Tapanuli orangutans can remember the location and ripening schedule of over 400 plant species across their range, tracking which trees will fruit in which season — knowledge passed directly from mothers to offspring over 15 to 16 years of intensive learning. Their memory of the forest is so precise that when fruit fails in one area, they navigate up to 15 kilometres overland to find food elsewhere, moving through unmapped routes their mothers taught them decades earlier.
• The species lives in a razor-thin zone between 500 and 1,500 metres elevation on just three mountaintops in Sumatra, sandwiched between human agriculture below and unsuitable forest above. Road infrastructure — even a single new highway — fragments their populations into smaller groups that cannot interbreed, making the Tapanuli orangutan one of the few great apes whose extinction could happen not because they're hunted, but because a forest is sliced in half.
