Fascinating facts about the Mountain Coati
- The western mountain coati inhabits cloud forest and páramo at altitudes of 1,300-4,250 m in the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador. A population discovered in the Apurímac, Cuzco region of southern Peru is more than 1,000 km south of the previously known distribution limit.
- Researchers uncovered a group of western mountain coatis in Peru's Apurímac-Cuzco region, a location more than 1,000 km south of any earlier record for the species. Scientists note that this distant population might belong to an undescribed taxon, highlighting the need for further taxonomic study.
- Unlike its eastern counterpart, the western mountain coati lacks a dark mid-dorsal stripe and shows a rufescent to blackish coat rather than a paler olive-brown one. The eastern form also has markedly smaller teeth.
- The western mountain coati is divided into two recognised subspecies. olivacea occurs in Colombia, while the slightly smaller and darker N. quitensis is found in Ecuador. The quitensis form also shows less distinct rings on its tail, a subtle visual cue that helps separate it from its northern counterpart. Because the precise border between their ranges has not been mapped, the exact point where one subspecies ends and the other begins remains uncertain.
