Fascinating facts about the Mountain Coati

• A mountain coati's snout is so mobile it rotates 60 degrees in any direction — a flexibility matched by almost no other mammal. They use it like a living excavator to probe soil and rotten logs for beetle larvae and grubs, feeling for vibrations their prey makes while moving. This hyper-articulate nose is why their name comes from the Tupi word 'kua-tim', meaning 'belt nose'.
• Female mountain coatis raise their young in nurseries of up to 25 mothers and infants living in the same tree canopy, a form of communal childcare unique among coatis. Males are booted out after mating and spend their entire adult lives as solitary wanderers, never returning to the group. This sexual segregation means males and females are so different in behaviour they were once thought to be separate species.
• Mountain coatis are one of the only carnivores that can descend trees headfirst, rotating their hind ankles 180 degrees to grip bark on the way down. Most mammals have to back down or jump, risking broken bones. This adaptation lets them hunt in the vertical world of the rainforest canopy where fruit-eating insects hide 30 metres above the ground.
• A single mountain coati eats over 3,000 insects per day during peak season, making them ecological engineers that control rainforest pest populations without needing pesticides. Their appetite is so fierce they'll flip over two-tonne logs and excavate metre-deep holes while foraging, aerating soil and spreading seeds accidentally as they search for food.
• In the mountains of Costa Rica and Panama where they live, coatis are one of the few large predators that have actually expanded their range in the past 50 years, moving both higher upslope and into human settlements. Unlike most rainforest mammals, they've learned to raid gardens and garbage, making them a living test of whether wildlife can survive by becoming flexible around people.
