Fascinating facts about the Southern African Hedgehog

• A Southern African hedgehog can curl into a ball so tight that a predator's teeth and claws can't penetrate it — because those 6,000 spines overlap like roof tiles, each one anchored to a muscle that contracts in a fraction of a second. No big cat, hyena, or snake has ever found a way past this armour when the hedgehog commits to the position. It's a defense system so effective the animal can afford to be slow and mostly nocturnal.
• They navigate Africa's grasslands partly by smell — their elongated snout contains up to 5,000 times more scent receptors than a human's nose — and partly by sound, picking up the footsteps of beetle larvae and millipedes buried in soil from up to 10 centimetres away. A single hedgehog can eat 200 insects in one night, each one located by nose and ears rather than eyes that barely see in the dark.
• For weeks after birth, baby hedgehogs' spines are soft and flexible — packed under their skin like a compressed filing system — so they don't injure the mother during pregnancy or nursing. Within hours of being born, the spines harden and pop through the skin, turning the tiny animal into a miniature fortress. By weaning, a hoglet is already armed and dangerous to predators.
• In laboratory tests, Southern African hedgehogs deliberately anointed their own spines with saliva and plant toxins, coating their armour with chemical defenses before sleeping — a behaviour scientists call 'anting' when it involves insects, but something far more intentional when the hedgehog self-applies the paste. It suggests they understand their spines need more than physical hardness to survive the savanna.
• A hedgehog's heart can slow from 190 beats per minute to as few as 20 during hibernation in colder months — a survival mechanism that lets them survive on stored fat through periods when insects vanish. They lose up to 40 per cent of their body weight during this dormancy, then rebuild it in three weeks of spring feeding. No other small mammal in southern Africa can compress and stretch its metabolism so dramatically.
