Fascinating facts about the Iberian mole

• A mole's forelimbs rotate nearly 180 degrees — they twist inward at the shoulder, then flip outward with each stroke, shoveling soil like a pair of biological excavators. This gives them a digging power-to-weight ratio that would shame any construction machine: a single mole can shift 40 times its body weight in earth per night. Their bones are packed so densely they weigh three times more than other mammals of the same size, anchoring the enormous muscles that power those spade-like paws.
• Underground, the Iberian mole navigates a labyrinth of tunnels longer than a football field using a sensory organ called a Eimer's organ — a ring of 25,000 touch receptors clustered on their nose. They are functionally blind (their eyes are covered by fur), but those nose sensors can detect the faintest vibration of an earthworm moving in soil three centimetres away. In darkness, they hunt by touch alone, and their brain devotes an area larger than our entire visual cortex to processing nose data.
• A mole's heart beats 600 times a minute while digging — twice the speed of a sprinting human — yet they generate almost no body heat while underground. Their metabolism is so finely tuned to cold, lightless tunnels that if brought above ground into warm conditions, they can actually overheat and die. They are creatures of one specific world: remove them from it, and they fall apart.
• Male Iberian moles stake out tunnel territories of up to 2,000 square metres — an area they must defend and maintain alone, without help, without rest. During breeding season they travel between female territories in search of mates, leaving their own tunnels exposed to rival males. This combination of isolation and seasonal exposure makes them one of the most aggressive solitary mammals in Europe: when two moles meet, they fight to the death within seconds.
• Earthworms are 90 percent water, but the Iberian mole's digestive system is a biological miser: they absorb water so efficiently that their urine is concentrated to syrup-like thickness, and they must drink almost no water their entire lives. Instead, they extract every drop from the bodies of their prey. This adaptation means they could theoretically survive on the same soil for years, recycling water through the earthworms, creating a closed-loop existence that few mammals achieve.
