- Burrowing is extremely energetically demanding for Botta's pocket gopher, requiring between 360 and 3,400 times as much energy as moving across the surface, with denser soils pushing the cost toward the upper end of that range. Because of this high cost, the species conserves energy by maintaining a low basal metabolic rate and low thermal conductance.
- When Botta's pocket gophers dig, they aerate the soil to a depth of about 20 cm, improving underground ventilation and nutrient exchange. Their excavations also create the striking Mima mounds that can rise up to 2 m high, reshaping the landscape. Populations have been estimated to move as much as 28 t of soil per hectare each year, most of which is displaced below ground rather than forming surface mounds.
- Botta's pocket gopher relies on its teeth rather than its claws to excavate tunnels, a trait that distinguishes it from many other gophers. Its incisors are larger and coated with a thicker layer of enamel, allowing it to bite through compacted clays and tightly packed sands that would quickly wear down claw-diggers.
- Male Botta's pocket gophers construct burrow systems that cover an average of 474 m², while females build smaller networks averaging 286 m². Beyond the immediate tunnels, each sex fiercely defends a larger exclusive zone around the entrance - about 810 m² for males and 390 m² for females - to protect its foraging and nesting area.
