• Over 100 individuals can occupy a single hectare, as observed in suitable grassland and swamp habitats. In suitable habitats this rodent is common, with densities exceeding that figure. The animals live in burrows but emerge during daylight to forage and to sun themselves on the rocks. Their diet is made up of leaves, flowers and stems of green plants they find in the high-altitude grassland.
• Within a burrow family group only one female breeds, while the others do not reproduce. The burrow is a complex system of tunnels and chambers usually occupied by a pair or a family group, and it may have up to a dozen entrances where faeces are deposited. Outside the burrow the rats are territorial, but inside they huddle together for warmth. This social arrangement allows the single breeding female to raise her litter while the group shares the shelter.
• Newborns are built for the alpine chill: their bodies, ears, limbs and tails are unusually short, cutting heat loss compared with their close relative. These reduced dimensions are specifically noted as adaptations to extreme winter cold. In addition, the lactation period is long, enabling the young to stay underground until they reach a greater age and are better insulated. The prolonged nursing therefore supports their survival in the high-altitude environment.
• The Sloggett's vlei rat has a notably short tail that measures roughly half the combined length of its head and body, giving it a compact silhouette compared with many other rodents. This proportion is a distinctive trait used to separate it from related species. The tail is also bicoloured, dark black on the dorsal side and a buff shade underneath, adding a subtle contrast to its overall grey-buff fur.
• The species bears the name of Col. Arthur Sloggett, honouring his service in South Africa where he collected the first specimen at Deelfontein in 1902. This eponym reflects the historical link between the early 20th-century military presence and scientific exploration in the region. The rat, also known as the ice rat, belongs to the Muridae family and is endemic to the high-altitude grasslands and rocky areas of southern Lesotho and South Africa.
