• A water vole can hold its breath for up to 5 minutes underwater — long enough to dive 2 metres down, strip plant roots bare, and return to the surface without once breaking the seal of its nostrils. Its ears fold shut when submerged, and a valve in each ear blocks water before it reaches the eardrum. This is not a mammal that decided to swim; it's a rodent engineered for it.
• In spring, a female water vole can rear four litters in a single season, each pup nursing for just 20 days before weaning. The math is brutal: if food is abundant and predators scarce, one pair can spawn 50 descendants within months. Then crash. Populations swing so wildly that a thriving marsh can collapse to zero voles within two years as vole cycles bottom out every 3–4 years across northern Europe.
• The American mink, introduced to Europe in the 1920s for fur farming, escaped into the wild and discovered the perfect prey: water voles that had no evolutionary fear of a mammal predator they'd never met. Within decades, mink wiped out water vole colonies across Britain and Scandinavia. In some regions, populations fell by 95 percent. A single escaped exotic became the reason vole colonies now need human protection.
• Water voles communicate by tooth-chattering, squeaking, and a sound like a tiny cough — but their most sophisticated signal is a gland-squeezed scent marker left on vegetation. Each vole's scent is as individual as a fingerprint; they use it to stake territory, warn rivals, and advertise breeding status. Walk along a stream where voles live and you're walking through a chemical newspaper written in odour.
• Unlike humans who can taste sweetness, water voles have lost the genes for sweet taste receptors entirely. This doesn't handicap them — they never evolved to crave sugar, so the loss costs nothing. Instead their palate is tuned to bitter and umami, helping them identify edible roots and reject toxic plants. Evolution didn't give them less; it rewrote their preferences to match their wetland life.
