This size gap translates to males weighing 41-81 g (1.4-2.9 oz) and females only 36-63 g (1.3-2.2 oz), making the males roughly six percent longer and eleven percent heavier.
- A male's home range can cover roughly the size of a small studio apartment, about 103 m² (1,110 ft²), while a female's range is tighter at 68 m² (730 ft²). - California voles can turn a newborn into a breeding adult in just weeks: gestation lasts three weeks, producing up to ten pups, though four or five are typical. A mother can become fertile again within 15 hours after giving birth, allowing several litters per year. - Seventeen subspecies of California vole are officially recognized, ranging from the San Francisco-area M. c. californicus to the desert-adapted M. c. mohavensis, some listed as special-concern or endangered.
