• Water deer fight with saber-like canine teeth. Bucks sport tusks averaging 5.5 cm (2.2 in) and sometimes growing to 8 cm (3.1 in), while does carry only tiny 0.5 cm (0.2 in) canines. These weapons replace antlers and let males stab rivals during territorial bouts, a trait shared by no other living cervid. The oversized teeth turn a harmless-looking deer into a true "vampire" fighter, shaping its unique mating strategy.
• South Korea shelters a massive water-deer population, with the Korean subspecies counted at about 700,000 individuals across the peninsula. By contrast, the Chinese subspecies is critically endangered, and reintroduction in Shanghai grew from just 21 deer in 2007 to between 227 and 299 by 2013.
