• When danger approaches, the swamp rabbit darts into water and swims away, often diving so that only its nose and eyes remain above the surface. This behaviour is linked to its secretive, nocturnal lifestyle and its preference for low-lying wetlands where predators such as dogs and alligators hunt. By entering the water it can hide among aquatic plants, using its strong swimming ability to evade capture.
• Measuring up to 21.7 in (55 cm) in length, the swamp rabbit is the largest of all cottontail species, a size that distinguishes it from its relatives. Males weigh between 4 and 5.6 lb (1.8 to 2.5 kg) and females between 3.6 and 5.9 lb (1.6 to 2.7 kg), giving an average weight of about 5 lb (2.3 kg). Its ears are notably smaller than those of other cottontails, while the hind legs display a bright orange colour that sets it apart visually.
• Swamp rabbits maintain a personal territory and organise males and females through dominance displays, vocalisations and occasional fights. Their home ranges can cover from 1 to 12 hectares, and they mark boundaries by "chinning", leaving pheromone-laden scent from glands near the chin. Communication includes squeaks, chirps, squeals and alert calls that reinforce the social order.
• In Texas the swamp rabbit breeds all year round, a pattern not seen elsewhere. Throughout the rest of its range the breeding season is limited to the months between February and August. Females can produce up to three litters each year, with each litter containing one to six young. Gestation lasts about 37 days, so the continuous breeding in Texas allows multiple overlapping litters throughout the year.
