• The ring-tailed vontsira is the only living representative of the genus Galidia, making its taxonomic position completely unique. No other species shares this genus, so all evolutionary study of Galidia focuses on a single species. This singular status highlights its distinct lineage within Madagascar's carnivores.
• Within the subfamily Galidiinae the ring-tailed vontsira holds the title of the largest member, even though it remains modest in overall size. Adults measure between 32 and 38 cm in length and weigh only 700 to 900 g, giving it a long, slender build with a pointed snout.
