• Its wingspan can reach up to 89 mm. The forewings are a muted grey marked with distinct black dashes, giving the insect a subtle patterned appearance. Across its range the span varies from 70 mm to the maximum 89 mm. Adults are on the wing from April through August, with the exact months depending on local climate.
• The larvae of the pine hawk-moth feed on a narrow group of conifers. Their diet includes Scots pine, Swiss pine and Siberian pine, as well as Norway spruce, providing the caterpillars with the needles they require for growth. These host trees are the same species on which the adult females lay their eggs, linking the life stages tightly to these conifers.
• A female pine hawk-moth deposits her eggs in small clusters of two or three. Each clutch is laid directly on the needles of pine or spruce trees, positioning the future larvae on their future food source. This egg-laying behaviour ensures that newly hatched caterpillars can begin feeding immediately on the same conifer species they will rely on throughout development. The strategy ties the reproductive cycle closely to the availability of suitable host trees.
