Common Blacktip Shark

Fascinating facts about the Common Blacktip Shark

• Blacktip sharks can launch themselves out of the sea at a speed of about 6.3 m/s (21 ft/s), spinning three or four times before splashing back down. These aerial bursts often follow a corkscrew feeding run through a school of fish, using the momentum to clear the water's surface. The jumps may also help dislodge irritating sharksuckers attached to their skin, showing how a single behavior serves both hunting and self-maintenance.
• Mitochondrial DNA reveals two deep genetic lineages in blacktip sharks: one confined to the western Atlantic and another spanning the eastern Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The split likely arose when the Atlantic widened and the Isthmus of Panama formed, isolating western-Atlantic populations. These lineages differ in shape, colour and life-history traits, and the eastern Atlantic group may even deserve its own species name, highlighting hidden diversity within a common coastal shark.
• Female blacktips give birth to between one and ten pups (usually four to seven) every other year after a 10-12-month gestation, using shallow coastal nurseries that shelter the young from predators. Remarkably, a 9-year-old female at the Virginia Aquarium produced a pup without any male, proving that blacktips can reproduce by automictic parthenogenesis, an ovum fusing with its own polar body, a trait once thought rare in sharks.
• Blacktip sharks inhabit waters shallower than 30 m (98 ft) across tropical and subtropical coasts worldwide, yet they can dive to depths of 64 m (210 ft) when needed. Their range stretches from Massachusetts to Brazil in the Atlantic, across the Indian Ocean rim, and from Southern California to Peru in the Pacific, even reaching island groups like Hawaii and the Galápagos. This preference for near-shore, often brackish habitats makes them frequent visitors to mangroves, estuaries and muddy bays, linking coastal ecosystems together.
• The IUCN lists the blacktip shark as vulnerable because its low reproductive output cannot keep pace with intense commercial and recreational fishing. Its meat, skin, fins and liver oil are highly valued, making it a target for longlines, nets and hook-and-line gear across its range. With females producing only a few pups every other year, over-exploitation quickly reduces local stocks.
