• The shortfin mako is the fastest known shark, capable of reaching bursts of 74 km/h. In normal swimming it can sustain about 50 km/h, but when it accelerates it can overtake most of its prey in a flash. Its streamlined fusiform body and powerful caudal fin give it the thrust needed for such speeds, and its endothermic physiology lets it keep a high activity level even in cooler water, further supporting its rapid bursts.
• A 2020 experiment in New Zealand recorded the strongest bite ever measured for a shark on a shortfin mako, registering roughly 3 000 lb (about 13 000 N) of force. The shark was coaxed onto a custom-made bite-meter, allowing researchers to capture the peak pressure of its jaw snap. This extraordinary bite strength, combined with its sharp, pointed teeth, enables the mako to tear large, fast-moving prey such as tuna and swordfish with ease.
• Shortfin makos are capable of remarkable long-distance movements; a female tagged off California was later recaptured in the central Pacific after traveling more than 2 776 km. Another individual covered 2 128 km in just 37 days, averaging about 58 km each day. These migrations demonstrate the species' ability to traverse vast oceanic expanses in search of prey or mates, a behaviour supported by its powerful swimming capacity and endothermic metabolism.
• A shortfin mako shark eats roughly three percent of its own mass every day, a consumption rate that far exceeds that of slower-moving sharks. After each meal it needs only one and a half to two days to break down the food, whereas a more sedentary species can take three to four days. This rapid intake and quick digestion support the mako's constant high-energy activity and enable it to sustain the intense bursts of speed for which it is famed.
