Fascinating facts about the Northern Masked Titi
- Atlantic titis occupy the widest range of any Callicebus species apart from C. torquatus, covering roughly 1,000 kilometres across Brazil's southeastern coastal and inland forests. They are endemic to Brazil and live mainly in humid forests east of the Andes, especially in the states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
- They conduct virtually all of their day-to-day life at least five metres above the forest floor, staying aloft for 99% of their activities. This arboreal habit is typical of masked titis, which are classified as tree monkeys. It is thought that remaining high in the canopy helps them avoid snake predation, a common threat on the ground.
- Because they avoid the forest floor, researchers have observed them eating soil found atop ant mounds. The elevated source lets them safely ingest mineral-rich earth while scanning for predators and staying close to the protective trees. Aggregate soil on ant mounds is easier for them to grasp with their opposable fingers than loose forest-floor topsoil, and the reduced leaf litter means they spend less time exposed to danger.
- Only five percent of Brazil's original Atlantic Forest remains, and just two percent is untouched. Because the forest has been reduced, masked titis rely on their ability to live in disturbed forests where food is more abundant. They do not distinguish between disturbed and undisturbed habitats, moving to any area that offers sufficient fruit, seeds and leaves. This flexibility lets the species persist despite the massive loss of its native range.
- Atlantic titis are usually monogamous, staying with a single mate for their entire lives. They produce one offspring each year, and the sexes are difficult to tell apart externally. The father assumes all infant-transport duties, carrying the baby continuously throughout the nursing period. This paternal care is a defining feature of their family dynamics.
