• A northeastern silky anteater's tongue is longer than its head and body combined — up to 16 centimetres of pure muscle that can flick in and out 160 times per minute, each strike hooking ants onto grooves coated in sticky saliva. It has no teeth, so it swallows ants whole, relying on a specialized stomach that grinds them like a bird's gizzard. This design means it can extract nutrition from insects most other predators can't touch.
• Among anteaters, only the silky kind is fully arboreal — it never touches the ground. Its prehensile tail works like a fifth limb, wrapping around branches with a grip so secure it can hang and feed one-handed. Its body weighs just 350–700 grams, making it the smallest anteater alive and the only one light enough to hunt on vines that would snap under a giant anteater's weight.
